All participants must be registered, sign required waivers and paperwork and attend the mandatory “Safety Meeting.” Registration is held at the Red Jacket School (Route 21 Shortsville). For rafters, register first and then park you vehicle in the middle of
Water Street.
The intent is to display your raft and let the public look at them prior to the start of the derby. Derby volunteers will assist you. Then, walk back to the school and enjoy the “Awful Waffle Pancake Breakfast.” HINT: and change your clothes at the locker room. At 10:30 we will have our mandatory “Safety Meeting” in the school cafeteria. Afterwards, we will walk to where your rafts are parked, take a few minutes to look over the competition, and then, as a group we will parade/convoy out to the starting point.
| 2.) |
All participants are required to wear US Coast Guard approved life jackets (personal floatation devices). The Sponsor has a limited supply of PFD’s for your free use. However, the deposit of your driver’s license is required. The PFD must be worn at all times. If you loose a PFD, it is a $10 fee.
| 3.) |
All participants are required to wear a properly fitting paddling helmet. The Sponsor has a limited supply of helmets for your free use. However, the deposit of your driver’s license is required. If you loose a helmet, it is a $35 fee.
| 4.) |
Not that we have to make this a rule, as all of us would gladly jump into freezing cold rapids, but if you notice a participant or event personnel whose safety is at risk, you need to stop and render assistance.
| 5.) |
All paddlers are required to wear appropriate clothing to protect against hypothermia. |
| 6.) |
This is an all-weather event. With the exception of lightning, the event will continue. In the event of lightning, the event will be postponed for later that day. An announcement will be made at the starting line.
| 7.) |
Police will be present at the starting line and participants may be screened for alcohol and non-prescription drug use. Any suspicion of use will prevent the participant from entering water (on his own free will anyway), forfeiture of all fees, possible beatings from his teammates and the evil eye from our insurance agent.
| 8.) |
No alcohol containers are allowed in or on the rafts. All rafts will be inspected prior to launch. The launch team reserves the right to confiscate and consume any suspect beverages and doesn’t have to share it with anyone.
| 9.) |
A rope of significant strength and length shall be securely attached to the canoe / rafts to help the launch team and recovery teams. The rope must be pulled into the craft during the race. For those teams who bring a short rope, the Recovery Team appreciates the rest period while they watch you drift by as they wait for the next craft.
| 10.) |
For canoes: Floatation bags, skirts and other sissy ways of cheating are allowable providing they do not cover more than 60% of the open area of the canoe.
| 11.) |
For rafts: STRICTLY ENFORCED THIS YEAR: All non biodegradable components shall be securely fastened to the main structure. Plastic barrels shall have a supplemental attachment, such as a continuous rope or cable that will keep a broken barrel that has separated from the main raft near the raft during the remainder of your feeble attempt to conquer the Canandaigua Outlet. The supplemental attachment must be strong enough to allow the Finish Line Team and the rafts occupants to pull the barrel out of the water without breaking away from the remainder of the raft.
| 12.) |
Do NOT use drywall screws to fasten any component unless the backside of the component has wood blocking and the tip of the screw DOES NOT PROTRUDE from the blocking. Drywall and sheet metal screws WILL NOT hold barrels together or wood to barrels plus it is very easy for the recovery crew to be cut or injured. Use bolts AND washers.
